BALTIMORE, BRUNCH, AND THE BMA

It was an overcast morning, so I decided to do something I haven’t done before.

I went to lunch at Gertrude’s at The Baltimore Museum of Art, and then took time to explore the sculpture garden and the collections in the museum itself. I’m embarrassed to say that I had never been there before even though I live outside of Baltimore.

Gertrude’s was really nice. I ordered one of the specials, shrimp and grits and it was delicious. It was nice sitting in the sculpture garden. I just wish there weren’t so many cicadas flying around. They are everywhere around here! After brunch, I toured around the sculpture garden and then went inside to see the collections. The BMA was built in 1914 and houses some of the world’s most famous European paintings and sculptures. I especially loved The Cone Collection, established by the Cone sisters, which contains many paintings by Matisse, as well as Picasso, Degas, VanGogh and others. Evidently the BMA has over 1000 works by Matisse alone!

My favorite work of art of the day, however, was an installation that you could actually walk into. Standing in the middle of the installation was like being engulfed by spray painted sheets. It was so cool! There are some other current exhibitions that are definitely worth noting like “Now Is The Time” and “Tschabalala Self: By Myself.” I walked around for almost two hours, then surprisingly the sun to came out and I went to hit some golf balls. A nice weekend so far!
