BEAUTY AND THE BOUTIQUE HOTEL

I have to admit, one of my favorite things to do at night is to binge watch documentary films on Netflix. Over the past few nights, I found two that were extremely good, Halston and Studio 54. Halston tells the life story of the famous fashion designer and Studio 54 tells the story of the rise and fall of the iconic disco nightclub owned by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager.

Both documentaries are intertwined and give a peak into an era that I had often heard about, but to be honest, didn't know much about.

I had heard of Ian Schrager often when growing up. He is best known as the founder of the "Boutique Hotel." When one thinks of some of the chicest, luxury hotels in New York and around the U.S., often they were developed by Schrager.

Born in New York City, I am familiar with some of his well-known hotels, including Morgans, which was the first of his boutique hotels, the Royalton and the Paramount. I absolutely love the beautiful and sophisticated style that exists in every hotel he designs.

A few years ago, I visited the Delano in Miami Beach. Not only was it a beautiful hotel, but very eclectic. Schrager partnered with Phillippe Starck to design a sophisticated and luxury hotel, which was an icon in South Beach for many celebrities.

Unfortunately, times have changed similar to the films I watched. The hotel has been closed and bought since the pandemic. Hopefully, the Delano will rise in it's glory again some day and I will be there to celebrate it.
